Welcome aboard the aircraft carriers: the USS Yorktown (CV-5), the USS Essex (CV-9), and the USS Intrepid (CV-11).

So just to confirm you used the Yorktown CV-5 1942 in the mission? If so we'll have to keep in mind that that ship does not have catapults. The chaps who start there will have to make deck runs.

So I guess we gotta sink the Musashi.

Maybe some of us should lug some 2000 pounders.

I'll add a couple more Yamato BBs to the practice room.

I would say lets deal with it as is. It does make sense you wouldn't have a low-level fuze for such a big bomb, lest you blow thine own arse off.

In the practice room last night I put five 2000 pounders into the center of one of those Yamatos and the only damage evident was the flak guns and turrets that took direct hits smoking. I wonder how many torpenae it would require. I'll have the practice room open again tonight for an hour before Jack's campaign.

In the F4U theres an option for 2-1000lbs and 1-2000lb bomb, with that load out you can take out a Japanese acc i 1 hit... so a few 1600 or 2000 lbs would do well in the sides or from up top..

Might be tricky to skip without a low-level fuze though.

Me and Dave were chucking torpenae at some Yamatos last night. Seems like 3-4 torpedoes hitting the same place will do the job. 3 if we are lucky, more often it took 4. Someone mentioned it might take 5 but a fifth was not needed in any of our runs.

I think between 1st and 2nd we should try to ensure we get at least 1 Yamato BB. They sank the Musashi in real life so if we get the 1 at least we kinda match that.

Good job whacking that BB (which sounds dirty but its not) and other vessels. That thing could put up a hell of a flak barrage.

And good job flying home Lippy and ZOD, nice to concentrate our defensive firepower into a little vic like that.

Awesome turn-out for mission - 05, we had 21 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - October 23rd.

"Philippine's Campaign - Leyte"
Mission - 06 - Battle for Samar & Taffy 3
Date: October 25th, 1944 (09:00 hrs)

After Action Report:

Good work on hitting the enemy task force. The group sank the enemy battleship Mushasi, the sister ship of the Yamato. The group also sank two destroyers.

In the early hours of this morning, our Navy engaged the enemy in what is now being called, "The Battle of Surigao Strait". The US Navy used six battleships, cruisers, and destroyers to decimate the enemy fleet. The enemy lost six ships altogether, including 3 destroyers, 2 cruisers, and a battleship (Fuso).

Our air group has been transferred to the Taffy battle group, and further assigned to Taffy 3 for this next operation.

Intelligence:

Good Morning Gentlemen ...

Welcome to Taffy 3 ... the force is comprised of 6 escort carriers, 4 destroyers, and 6 escort destroyers. Your air group has been assigned to the following ships: the USS KitKun Bay, the USS Princeton, and the USS San Jacinto.

We've received submarine reports of a large enemy battle group steaming from the San Bernardino Straight, north of Samar. The enemy force was reported to be turning south, heading in our direction. The enemy battle force is comprised of two battleships, one was identified as the Yamato, 2 cruisers, and 4 destroyers.

We've sent a emergency message to Adm. Halsey for assistance, however, the TF-38 battle group is too far out of range to help us. The last sighting of the enemy group was in grid BZ-37, pad 2. The heading at that time was 135 degrees at 20 knots. It's possible that enemy aircraft maybe enroute to attack our ships, however, we have nothing on radar at this time.

The Mission:

We are sending everything we have to locate and engage the enemy battle group. Search for the group, flying a approach starting at grid CA-36, pad 5, then turn and fly north-west to grid BZ-37, pad 2, on your map. After the group makes contact and completes your attacks on the enemy's ships ... proceed to land at Tacloban airfield, grid BW-31, pad 2.

The group will be overflying an enemy held airfield located in grid BY-35, pad 3, on Samar. Attack and strafe this airfield on the way to Tacloban.

Airfield RECON Photo:

1st Squad (FM-2) - arm with bombs.  Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the destroyers. Also, provide CAP for the strike aircraft.
2nd Squad (TBF) - arm with torpedoes. Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the battleships. After your attacks on the enemy ships, attack and strafe this airfield in grid BY-35, pad 3.
3rd Squad (TBF) - arm with torpedoes. Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the battleships. After your attacks on the enemy ships, attack and strafe this airfield in grid BY-35, pad 3.
HQ & Guests (TBF) - arm with torpedoes. Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the cruisers. After your attacks on the enemy ships, attack and strafe this airfield in grid BY-35, pad 3.

Notams:

*All pilots to use same comms channel this mission.
*All deck aircraft have 1% fuel at this time.

1st Squad (FM-2) - seats 49-56
2nd Squad (TBF) - seats 1-24
3rd Squad (TBF) - seats 25-48
HQ & Guests (TBF) seats 57-68, AIR - START, zero fuel

Good Luck ...

I figured FM-2s meant CVEs. Did you have to substitute the Princeton and San Jacinto for CVEs cause of space problems?

Too bad we don't get to land on them.

I was able to use the San Jacinto and the Princeton for the mission. Eight TBF's are able to fit on their desks, however the spawn location has them in the center of the flight deck, see the attach photo. That means launching from the single catapult will be a must. This will extend our mission time a bit. We will also have to take our time getting off the decks as all the deck aircraft will only have one catapult to launch from.

Squad leaders should take the last assigned aircraft and assume ATC roles for launch, ensuring their squads get off the decks safely, thus limiting re-starts. Just my two cents on this mission.  :)

Hmm, yeah CVLs require some guys to make a pretty hard left hand turn to get to the catapult. Turning on deck becomes harder the faster a ship is going, since we're using catapults anyways maybe have the ships move a little slower? If you haven't already done that.

FM-2s are limited to 100lb bombs. I wonder how many a/c it will take to sink a DD. Can we sink even one if all of 1st dogpiles it? Gonna require some testing.

Throw in a couple of CVL's in the practice room, just a thought.

Yeah I have two CVEs in there, actually maybe three... Could add CVLs but I'm not sure if the dogfight spawn points would give the same effect though.

A better option might be to forgo part the dogfight practice in favor of a COOP for practicing takeoffs. Just takeoff and then restart it a few times for practice.

I'm beyond "PISSED" ... this has now been "TWO" weeks in a row that our Hawaiian power company has lost power, AND they have done it on a Tuesday at the same time of day !!!

They claim that fallen trees were to blame, however during both instances there was no rain or high winds. I called and voiced my frustration with their company in a very loud and military manner, the poor young lady at the other end of the phone had her ear melted off the side of her head ... I think.

Yeah, its gonna be a pretty compact area for three squadrons worth of kablooie. Only a handful of us were over the target last mission and there were some close calls. Wood may be adding some more US flags to the scoreboard after this one.

Maybe we should consider assigning two squadrons to the ground attack and keep one clean and high on the perch to deal with e/a?

Submarine reports state that 2x Maru type transports are trying to sneak into Ormoc Bay, also there are numerous enemy vehicle supply convoys moving along the road in grid BU-29, pad 5, area. The enemy port at Ormoc Bay has received more equipment and troops during the night to be used against our troops.

We've also been tasked to hit the enemy's large caliber artillery guns on Hill 918, grid BU-30, pad 3. These guns need to be destroyed as they cover the north-south road to Ormoc Bay, as well as, the bay itself. The guns are supported by AAA on the hill and Ormoc Bay is also covered with AAA.

This area is also protected by regular enemy air patrols.

"Philippine's Campaign - Leyte"
Mission - 13
Date: December 7th, 1944

After Action Report:

Excellent job hitting those enemy aircraft. The group shot down over 40 enemy planes !!! We only lost a few planes, and received minor damage to the airfield. Most of the enemy paratroopers were killed and those that survived were captured and are now in the hands of the MP's.

Intelligence:

Good Morning Gentlemen ...

Our tasking for today is a large group of enemy Maru type transports with destroyer escort. The group is made up of:  6x Maru transports and 2x destroyers. Coast watchers reported that the transport group was in grid BR-32, steaming toward the Leyte north-west coast. Speed was estimated at 15-20 knots.

Once the attack on the enemy ships is completed, fly to grid BV-29, pad 1.  We are providing air-cover for a sea-borne assault by the army. If successful, the army will be able to push north and take Ormoc Bay.

Great turn-out for mission - 13, we had 18 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - December 18th.

"Philippine's Campaign - Leyte"
Mission - 14
Date: December 11th, 1944

After Action Report:

Great job hitting the enemy naval supply convoy, as well as, covering the Army beach landings. The group sank all six  enemy supply transports and both destroyers, also the group destroyed 20+ enemy aircraft in the air.

Intelligence:

Good Morning Gentlemen ...

Our tasking for today is another large group of enemy Maru type transports with destroyer escort. The group is made up of:  6x Maru transports and 2x destroyers. Coast watchers reported that the transport group is in grid BR-32, steaming toward the Leyte north-west coast. Speed was estimated at 15-20 knots, same location as before.

We believe that this is the enemy's last push to reinforce Leyte. The Army is pushing onto Ormoc Bay today, which would mean we would have control of the island. Once the attack on the enemy ships is completed, fly to grid BU-30, pad 2, as we are providing air-cover for Army assaulting Ormoc Bay.

There are also three US destroyers supporting the Army's push into Ormoc. They are located in Ormoc Bay and have begun to shell the port area.

The Mission:

*All Squads (P-38) - Arm with bombs (rockets are optional, if willing to strike Ormoc Bay after ship attack). Attack enemy ships in grid BR-32, pad 1-3. When the strikes on the enemy ships are complete, fly to grid BU-30, pad 2, and cover the Army's assault on Ormoc Bay. As always, be mindful of enemy aircraft in this area.

"Philippines Campaign - Mindoro"
Mission - 15 , this is the 1/2 way point of the campaign
Date: December 14th, 1944

After Action Report:

Well Done ... hitting those enemy supply ships.  The group sank all six ships and a destroyer. The group also shot down 20+ enemy planes while covering the Army's assault on Ormoc Bay.

The campaign for Leyte is a victory !!!  Other than mop-up operations, the Army has secured the island.

Our air group has been transferred to the Navy's TF-38 and further assigned to the following carriers: the USS Essex, the USS Lexington, and the USS Yorktown. The group will be flying the F6F Hellcat on this mission. TF-38 is enroute to the island of Mindoro for the next part in the Philippines Campaign.

Intelligence:

Good Afternoon Gentlemen ... Welcome to TF-38

Our tasking for today is the airfield on Mindoro, grid BD-36, pad 6, on your map. This is an active airfield with both fighters and bombers assigned here. AAA is rated as medium. A submarine report we received also noted that two enemy destroyers provide AAA cover for this airfield.

Great turn-out for mission - 15, we had 20 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - January 8th.

"Philippines Campaign - Mindoro"
Mission - 16
Date: December 15th, 1944

After Action Report:

Well Done ... hitting the Mindoro airfield. The airfield has been knocked out of action and will not be of use to the enemy for tomorrow's invasion. The group destroyed more than 50+ aircraft in the air and on the ground.

Intelligence:

Good Morning Gentlemen ...

Our task for today is to cover the invasion sea-borne landings near the Mindoro airfield area, grid BD-36. We've been able to decode some of the enemy's message traffic and discovered they are going to try and employ a new and horrific tactic ... flying their aircraft directly into our ships.

The Mission:

All aircraft arm with default ammo. If that enemy pilot wants to die for his emperor, then it's our job to see that he does ... "BUT" ... not by letting him hit our ships !!!

Cover and protect the fleet and the invasion landings in grid BD-36, on your map.

how dead is it?

  Any lights come on?
No lights generally means Power Supply  has gone out, pretty easy to replace.
  Does it beep at you?
Beeping is a coded message pointing towards the problem.  Listen for a pattern, it will repeat.
Something like 3 short beeps, or 2 short, 1 long, etc.  Various board manufacturers use different beep codes. most are 3 or 4 beeps or less.

Someone broke into my house and spilled a Screwdriver on my desk, the air vents are on top the tower.

Green light on the keyboard, but she wont boot and fans are screaming.

WEll, That's gonna take some troubleshooting.

It depends on how much liquid got in there as far as determining how likely you are to get it going again short of replacing the the main board.  Sounds like the power supply survived.

If it was enough that some might have dripped onto the  system board, and might have gotten to the underside of it, best to remove it and clean off any residue with alcohol wipes.   Fruit juice is one of the worst things to let sit in there. It's acidic and the sugar grows really ugly brown black bacteria and mold.

Screaming fans usually means it thinks it's overheating the CPU, or there's a serious short.

I'd start by Removing the Heatsink and cpu and cleaning them up with alcohol wipes.
Depending on how much liquid got in there, you might find that's easier to do with the board removed from the tower.

If it was just a little, I'd start by unplugging all  of the power plugs from the power supply to the system.  Then only plugging the board and hard drive, and the CPU fans back in after you've removed cleaned and reinstalled the CPU and heatsink assy and cleaned them up and replaced the thermal transfer medium between them, and also removed the ram sticks, cleaned and reinstalled them. Same with the video card.  The idea here is, clean it up, then try to boot with as little attached to the system as is necessary.. which would mean Just the hard drive, Cpu, ram, and video card and of course a keyboard, maybe a mouse, and of course the monitor.   If it won't boot with just minimal load, might have shorted something on the board..
Anyway, after cleaning it up, and going to minimal configuration described above, should see or hear something change. Maybe it'll start beeping at you, maybe it'll display the welcome screen for the main board.   And if you're really lucky you may have managed to fix it, will just need to shut it down and plug in your optical drives ( cd, dvd, whatever you've got that was left unplugged the last time. )

With liquid spills it's a bit of a crap shoot. Could just need a cleanup, might be just a fan or two, might be the whole board is toast, maybe more.  Hopefully your hard drive is ok, that's where the important stuff is. Everything else is replaceable.
Open it up, clean it up.  put it back together, see if it changes, might just be all it needed.. might at least start beeping at you which could tell us something more.
Good luck.

S~ All.

It has been suggested that we might want to test the audio on Discord while in game to see how everyone sounds during actual game play. I think it's a great idea and as we all know I've been having mic issues, and I think my button might need a little help, or maybe I need to change ptt buttons.  It's a good  way to be more sure you're being heard when you're talking in game.
There was some talk after the last mission about near friendly kills, etc ( the usual)  due to confusion about who's in on a target.  Of course there's going to be some of that no matter how good we are about it.  But if there's some setting I can change on the voice server that'll help, or if some one's button is a little intermittent, I think recording during the actual game play might provide a clue. This way we can make sure when you're calling a target , you're being heard.  It's a way to start looking for a way to reduce the chances of a friendly kill  at least.
I'm thinking that maybe  while in game, for whatever reason, flaky push to talk buttons,  maybe voice  audio level changing  when the game launches, audio delays when the game is running, maybe just being too quick on and off the ptt button because it's a combat situation, who knows, But if there's something we can do to minimize that kind of thing from happening I'm thinking getting a recording so I , or you, can listen to it and see what's actually coming through on comms during an actual combat mission would be a good place to start looking for ways to make that situation better and reduce the chances of a friendly kill.
So what I want to do is record what comms sounds like during the next mission by saving an audio file of it, then later I'll listen to see if I can't find something  I could fix with settings on comms.    I've found a good way to record, it doesn't affect bandwidth because it uploads the audio file for download after  the mission's over.  I'll also send it to, or make it available for anyone else that wants to listen to it.

Any thoughts? Objections? Suggestions?   Let me know. thanks.     O yea,  If we decide to try recording, we'll want to make sure everyone on comms  knows recording is active. Not knowing you're being recorded is not cool, and we wouldn't want to endanger any one's decision to run for political office in the future.  Thanks for reading.

P.S.  I'm also hoping a few nuggets of comedy gold might be found in there, too.

"Philippines Campaign - Mindoro"
Mission - 17
Date: December 17th, 1944

After Action Report:

Well Done ... covering the fleet and sea-borne landing during the invasion. The group shot down over 40 enemy aircraft in the air, many of which were the enemy's new terror weapon, the "Kamikaze".

The group is moving to the airfield on Mindoro for the next operation.  The group will be flying the P-38 Lighting and the A-20 Havoc.

Intelligence:

Good Morning Gentlemen ... Welcome to Mindoro.

The Army has found very light resistance here on Mindoro and has already secured just over 1/2 of the island. The Sea-Bee's have secured this airfield and have made numerous repairs.  They have also secured a partially completed airstrip on the north side of the island in grid BE-41, pad 4. That airfield will be ready in about 2 weeks.

Our task for today is to hit the enemy's communication facilities and Kindley Airfield on island of Corregidor, grid BB-46, pad 2, as well as, the nearby sea-plane base just to the south, grid BB-45, pad 6.

Re your comms ideas, sounds good BB. I think one area where we are kinda handicapped is Discord's 200% limit when you are manipulating other people's volumes on your end. In Vent you could go up to like 500, 600 percent or more. You could crank someone up as much as you needed. I'm finding 200% is not enough in some cases.

I agree, DW.   Seems if some one has to be turned up more than double, something is wrong on their end.. in this case I mean my end. i'm hoping I've improved it to where I can be consistently heard again.

Sound on computers has always been the most frustrating thing to troubleshoot for me, and they seem to keep making it more and more troublesome. It's treated like it's the red headed step child of PC tech.

You guys probably did, however I've been sick since that mission, today was really the first time that I've been able to even look at my computer over this past week. So all I did was cut and paste the original mission briefing I had prepared and posted that.

Good Luck ...

From February through the end of June 1945, only sporadic fighting occurs across most of the Philippine Islands. On June 28th, MacArthur announces that the operations in Luzon are over. It is now five months and 19 days since the invasion of the Philippines. There are still many Japanese through-out the islands who will go on fighting until the end of the war. Much of the mopping up will be left to the Filipino units aided by US Eighth Army troops, who will take over responsibility for Luzon and the other Philippine islands in order to free Sixth Army to prepare for the invasion of Japan.

This concludes the Philippines Campaign. It has been my pleasure to build this campaign for our Squadron.  I hope you enjoyed flying this campaign as much as I enjoyed building it.
