Happy to do some testing in the morning... I have had this entire week off from work (starting a new gig on Monday) and can try some low level flat spin recoveries...
Wood
QuoteThe weight distribution of the P-39 was supposedly the reason for its tendency to enter a dangerous flat spin, a characteristic Soviet test pilots were able to demonstrate to the skeptical manufacturer who had been unable to reproduce the effect. After extensive tests, it was determined the spin could only be induced if the aircraft was improperly loaded, with no ammunition in the front compartment. The flight manual noted a need to ballast the front ammunition compartment with the appropriate weight of shell casings to achieve a reasonable center of gravity. High-speed controls were light, consequently high-speed turns and pull-outs were possible. The P-39 had to be held in a dive since it tended to level out, reminiscent of the Spitfire. The recommended never-exceed dive speed limit (Vne) was 475 mph (764 km/h) for the P-39.
Soon after entering service, pilots began to report that "during flights of the P-39 in certain maneuvers, it tumbled end over end." Most of these events happened after the aircraft was stalled in a nose high attitude with considerable power applied. Concerned, Bell initiated a test program. Bell pilots made 86 separate efforts to reproduce the reported tumbling characteristics. In no case were they able to tumble the aircraft. In his autobiography veteran test and airshow pilot R.A. "Bob" Hoover provides an account of tumbling a P-39. He goes on to say that in hindsight, he was actually performing a Lomcovak, a now-common airshow maneuver, which he was also able to do in a Curtiss P-40. An informal study of the P-39's spinning characteristics was conducted in the NASA Langley Research Center 20-foot Free-Spinning Tunnel during the 1970s. A study of old reports showed that during earlier spin testing in the facility, the aircraft had never tumbled. However, it was noted that all testing had been done with a simulated full ammunition load, which drew the aircraft's center of gravity forward. After finding the original spin test model of the P-39 in storage, the new study first replicated the earlier testing, with consistent results. Then, the model was re-ballasted to simulate a condition of no ammunition load, which moved the aircraft's center of gravity aft. Under these conditions, the model was found to often tumble when thrown into the tunnel.
so maybe it's more vulnerable to the flat spin after the cannon rounds have been expended? worth a test. :surprised-027:

QuoteLt. Quick stated that he saw the P-39 in a nose high attitude at an altitude of 13,000" and then immediately go into an attitude of apparent tumbling. Lt. Quick continued describing said tumbling as a nose, right wing tip, and tail maneuver, end over end, and then the aircraft fell into a normal spin of two (2) to three (3) turns, at which time, the pilot apparently recovered. At Lt. Quick's altitude of approximately 10,000', the P-39 immediately fell into a spin to the left. Lt. Quick's actual words were "In a very slow, flat, spin. It was so flat, it was unbelievable." Lt. Quick hollered "Jump", but there was no response to his call, and no apparent recovery from the spin. Aircraft crash 12 miles SW of the city of Kingman, and immediately burst into flames.

QuoteMEMORANDUM REPORT ON
P-39Q Airplane, AAF No. 44-3455
Subject: Report of Spin Tests
Section: Flight
Serial No: ENG-47-1779-A
Conclusions
1. The P-39 should not be spun intentionally under any circumstances.
2. The P-39 should not be snap rolled as the roll usually ends in a spin.
3. The best spin recovery is to simultaneously apply opposite rudder and neutralize the stick.
4. Power should be cut immediately if a power on spin is entered.
5. Care must be excercised during the recovery to prevent an accelerated stall and re-enty into the spin.
6. The wing tip spin chute does not aid recovery of the P-39Q from a flat spin.

Lowest flat spin recovery I did was 2500 ft, with recovery around 250 ft.
The following tip sheet is for in-game only as flight manuals more than likely differ.

My method for flat spin recovery in a P-39 type has always been the same. Pretty similar to what you posted.
Chop throttle, drop gear and full flaps, full rudder in whichever direction to counter the spin and push the stick full forward. (I never use any aileron imput, it never seemed to help for me.)
You have to do all these things and hold it like that, you have to be patient. The first thing you'll notice is vapor trails coming from your wingtips, when that happens the nose will start to drop. You will transition from the horizontal into the vertical but still be spinning. Again you have to be patient and hold your controls as noted above. Once in the vertical the revolutions will become slower and slower before stopping. Once it stops, throttle up, raise gear and flaps and pull gently out of the dive. Which can be hard especially if the ground is rushing up at you but as noted if you reef back on the stick you can go right back into a spin.
I've found this to be pretty foolproof. The only time it has'nt worked is when I've messed up and ruddered in the wrong direction. One key thing is to take action quickly. As soon as you get yourself into a position where you are gonna stall and spin, start doing what you gotta do. Don't be full throttle all the way into a full on flat spin or it will be harder to get out.
DW
S~ All,
Just tested both Hollywood's and DW's methods for getting out of a flat spin using a P-400. I crashed twice, then I was able to do four successful recoveries. I started at an altitude of 7000m recovering at 3000m almost every time. So, now I'm convinced I know the proper technique for recovery, however, thus far in our campaign missions we've been climbing to roughly 10,000 ft (3000m) and engaging the enemy at that height or lower.
With the altitude required to recover, it's possible but very unlikely, that someone could recover before they crashed. My recommendation would be to Boom & Zoom the enemy versus getting into a turning battle. This offers you to maintain your speed throughout your attack, greatly reducing the chance of your plane getting into a flat spin.
My 2 cents :)
S~
All good info in this thread.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone paid attention to whether a clockwise or counterclockwise spin is easier to recover?
2. If so, does turning off the motor make any difference and if it does, does it have anything to do with the direction of the spin?
It's been suggested to me that shutting the motor off can help. I've tried it. It sounds reasonable to me, but only when spinning in one direction and not the other due to the torque, even at idle, causing a little bit of roll force, possibly fighting the ailerons depending on the direction of the spin (which affects the direction the ailerons are trying to get the plane to move towards).
The times I've tried turning the motor off are when I seem to be locked into a flat spin and nothing else seems to be working, and had some success, but it might have just been coincidental and would have come out of the spin at about that time anyway without turning it off. So basically, all I've got is what I consider
to be anecdotal evidence of shutting the motor off helping, nothing definitive.
I use opposite rudder and ailerons into it, with neutral elevator until the nose starts to bob up and down, then pushing forward on the stick.
Spinning at 7000m? Thats like 23,000 feet. Thats pretty darn high. Recovering at 3000m\9800ft seems a long time but maybe it takes longer at that altitude. Flat spin recovery can be done in about 2500ft with a P-39\400 when the spin is entered at 3000ft though its pretty hairy.
To your thought about spin direction BB, I was just doing some practice and did'nt notice any major difference between left and right. Its so hard to say though, does one come out a couple revolutions faster than the other? Maybe but every spin is different too. I did'nt see anything that made me say "Wow, spinning this way is easier to recover." or vice versa.
I'd be a little wary of killing my engine though. :thinking-008:
DW
QuoteLowest flat spin recovery I did was 2500 ft, with recovery around 250 ft.
Anything under this and I smacked the ground.
BB, I don't subscribe to the thought of turning off the engine... that's just one more thing to do when you do recover... not to mention that when you start to pull out, you want to some power as well.

Good question BBQ, All award submissions should be directed to HQ, Wood, or myself via the "My Messages" on this web site. Remember that anyone can submit for an award or recognition. HQ will review all submissions and make the final determination for the awards at the conclusion of the campaign. (http://www.aceshigh.ws/forum/Smileys/default/drinking-42.gif)

S~ All,
Week 11, was a very challenging mission. The weather, rain, was low visibility and at a low altitude the wind was gusting hampering our ability to acquire the target aircraft, as well as, our aiming. These conditions also hampered our ability to see an enemy getting into the 6 o'clock position on our planes, as the AI aircraft did not suffer from finding and destroying a breather aircraft. These factors all resulted in fairly low scores and a low survival rate for this mission.
However, as challenging as it was ... it was fun to fly :)
~S~ All,
Very overdue scoring coming up.... M12 - Jun-27

Just found out about photobucket and deleted my account since it's no longer of any use to me.

3rd Squadron hit the enemy on the beach last week...thought we had some ground kills too.

Your fraudulent claims were rejected by HQ, now straighten up and fly right 3rd Squadron!
DW
Oh never mind then. I see the cumulative stats went up. It just didn't show in the individual mission stats for #13.
Any way we could credit the flights that sunk the carriers not the individual. It was a team effort.
That makes since to me.
Problem is the score keeper would have to keep track of all who hit the boat.
Doable, however tons of extra work.
~S
Yeah giving credit to guys who got hits would be very difficult. We were talking about this a few weeks ago, sometimes tracks can be real wonky and not show things. Or in the case of bombs can sometimes show a different result each time you view a track. Although.. are the user STAT bomb hit records reliable?
It might be doable if a certain squadron is tasked with sinking carriers and they get one, to credit that squadron en masse somehow.

I agreed with DW, sometimes when I review the tracks, I don't see bomb drops nor torps in the water... it would be difficult to split up hits opposed to sunk.
I like the idea of squadron recommendations on a particular mission.. sort of a unit citation?
Great topic for next meeting?

Who had hits on the ships?
I totally put an unarmed torpedo into the side of a destroyer. Interrogated survivors from that part of the ship report it left their ears ringing for at least 30 seconds.

I got a hit and then died so I don't remember anything about it .
~S~
I got a good hit on EA,his engine was smoking so I pulled off and as I did he turned and filled my plane full of holes, ruptured my fuel tank and my guns jammed,I did make it back to base, don't know nothin about no ships.
Keep shooting until the little bugger is on fire or he suffers a major structural failure, Gat. Don't turn your back on a smoker.
DW
I got a hit on a cruiser & Nimble hit the carrier with a torpedo right after Twenty's hit it.
Arent we going to discuse scoring hits on a ship for points at the next meeting.

S~ All,
Wood ... I believe that my ship "hit" was actually a ship destroyed ... sunk a destroyer. :)
QuoteI believe that my ship "hit" was actually a ship destroyed ... sunk a destroyer.
I was under the impression that we were only tracking ship "hits" moving forward, hence why the ship destroyed column is grayed out.
The issue being that on larger ships it might take more than one hit to sink it... and the near impossible equitable nature of tracking hits for some and sunk ships for others.
Unless we address this in the next meeting... "Hits" are what we are tracking...
S!
HW
Only scoring "hits" is correct.

but after a second look.... the map does not have front line markers.... so technically, you bailed and survived. I can give you survival credit on the next posting for Mission 22a to even it out.

Hi Lippy,
We are not counting ships sank but rather torpedo hits by the pilot. This was a change back about mission 8 I think. The change was voted on during a Squad meeting and passed. However, the squad you flew for does get a ship sunk as a team.

Here is a little quiz for you AH guys.... Which Pilot has scored the most enemy kills in a single campaign mission? How many kills was it and it what campaign?
All I remember is it was in an earlier game version where zeroes were easier to shoot down, there were fewer pilots in AH and the pilot in question was young and had yet to learn modesty.
Whats YOUR excuse, SKAT?
:surprised-027:
DW
Well, no excuse needed. Thank you for the compliment. If the kills were easier then, my accomplishment must be of note. Also the I have never known the pilot in question to EVER be modest or humble

Next post is from last night's mission - Mission 38 - flown 30-Jan-18.
There four (4) missisons remaining.
** Other note, on survival percentages, I noticed that DW had hacked my excel spreadsheet and provided faulty survival ratios.. they have since been corrected.

One,
everyone loves me, SKAT inappropriately so.
Two, zeroes. Don't turn with them. Seriously. Stop it. Its not funny anymore.
DW
The scoreboard above I think is from mission #37 ... as we flew mission #38 last night. :)
This campaign is in it's final legs as we have only 4 more missions to fly.
There have been two score board postings today.
#37 with lots of killers
#38 last night.
I hit a three stacker last night but didn't sink it.
Do it need to sink to get the hit.?.. (wavey)
Hey Fragg,
You get credit for a torpedo hit even though the ship did not sink. Awhile back the leadership changed tracking from ships sunk to ships hit. This allowed everyone who's mission was to attack shipping to get credit for their actions against shipping instead of a single player getting the credit for the kill shot torpedo.
Most shipping attacks are a team effort to sink something larger than a transport. :)
QuoteI hit a three stacker last night but didn't sink it.

I am tracking ship hits over ships destroyed. In the "user STAT" scoring, it records ships destroyed and bomb hits. It sees bombs, torps and drop tanks all the same in regards to bomb drop. If you get a hit, I can see Bomb Hit.
Now, in your case Fragg, unfortunately, you did not survive the landing. If you die, no points recorded.
W
Out of curiosity, does a ship hit register if the ship has already been sunk?
DW
Evidently not. I came in after Hollywood and hit the same ship he did but he had already gotten the kill.
QuoteIt sees bombs, torps and drop tanks all the same
Wait... What? You can sink ships with drop tanks???

No, it just counts a dropped tank as a dropped bomb in the stats.
DW
That was a joke you twit!
OH Hogan! DW is NOT a Twit....He is a Butthead. Geez.

Just a quick note...
A special tip of the hat to the following Pilots - with one mission remaining...
To date:
BBQhead has attended every mission
JellyMan and SKAT - have made all but one each...
Hogan and Jack attended all but two,
followed by Dealin'Dave and Bear, Wang and Wood.
Kudos Gents!!!
Didn't I shoot something down at the end of the mission last night?
A Kate maybe?
Quote

A Kate maybe? - Col. Hogan
Did you survive?
To recap on scoring -
Air Kills under your belt - and land and live - Full Credit
Air Kills under your belt - and bail out - and live - 1/2 the kills (1 air kill under your belt - bail out and survive = 1 air kill)
Air Kills under your belt - die or bail out and captured - nil
Does it show in the track?
I re-took off after all were down and shot that Kate.

I reviewed the track from this past Tuesday. Mission 41.
Mission time 39min30sec... Zero shot your wing off and you bailed near ships "Turkeys" were attacking.
Am I missing something? Perhaps a previous mission?
Hogan are you mixing up the Solomon's Campaign with the Last Deadline Manila Mission ?
Kopf
Yes I am.
I will be leaving now (wavey)
