After Action Report:

Nice job escorting the bombers to Kahili.  Our submarine in the area reported numerous enemy aircraft and facilities were destroyed.

Intelligence:

Balalle airfield near the Shortland Islands is today's target.  This airbase is heavily protected by enemy fighters and AAA. On Shortland Island, there is an active sea-plane base with A6M-N fighters stationed there. The enemy has moved the destroyer out of Kahili Bay and it is now patroling the Shortland Island area.

The USS Gato is going to try and hit the destroyer.

The Mission:

"Solomon Islands Campaign"
Mission - 32
Date: August 6th, 1943

After Action Report:

Nice job escorting the bombers to Balalle.  Our submarine in the area reported numerous enemy aircraft and facilities were destroyed.

Intelligence:

The Marines have secured the Island of New Georgia, well done "All" !!!  Now we begin looking at securing the islands of Kolombongra and Vella LaVella. It seems that the enemy knows we have to take these islands and are rushing troops and supplies to these areas.

One of our submarines reported that an enemy naval convoy is heading to Vella LaVella. It looks like they are heading for the Biloa Anchorage, grid BB-24, pad 9, on your map. There is a "Shiga Escort ship" currently at anchor in the bay.  There are also, three enemy transports off-loading equipment and troops.

AAA and enemy aircraft will be in this area.

The Mission:

Good Morning Gentlemen ... This is going to be a multi-prong mission.

SBD's - will arm with bombs and attack the Biloa Anchorage.  Bomb the ships, hit the AAA, then destroy the troops and equipment.

TBF's - will arm with torpedoes and hit the naval convoy. Then return to the Biloa Anchorage and assist in hitting the troops and equipment.

"Solomon Islands Campaign"
Mission - 33
Date: August 15th, 1943

After Action Report:

Well done hitting the enemy transport ships and the troop build-up at Biloa Anchorage.  Our group also sank three transports and a destroyer. Our planes destroyed enemy troops, vehicles, and a transport ship on Biloa beach.

Intelligence:

The Marines and Sea-Bee's have landed on the beaches of Vella LaVella and are building an airfield at Barakoma, grid BB-25, pad 3, on your map.

The enemy is sending warships to harass and destroy this new airfield. Our submarines were able to sink a couple of their destroyers, however, the remainder of the enemy task force got through the submarine screen and is still quite large.

The sub's report, the enemy task force consists of the following : 2 - Cruisers and 4 - Destroyers. The enemy ships are on a south-east heading passing through Wilson Strait on a heading toward Vella Gulf. Search for the enemy ships in grids BA / BB - 24.

Enemy aircraft are always a threat is this area.

"Solomon Islands Campaign"
Mission - 34
Date: August 28th, 1943

After Action Report:

Excellent job attacking the enemy task force. Our group was able to destroy all of their cruisers and destroyers. The enemy's task force was not able to press their attack on the new Barakoma airstrip.

VMF-213 is heading to Australia for R&R. The fighter squadron replacing them will be VMF-214, the Black Sheep.  The Black Sheep bring with them the new and upgraded F4U-1A. They will begin flying missions immediately.

The Sea-Bee's have completed the airstrip on Velle LaVella and we will move our group to this new forward base.

Intelligence:

Both the Shortland and Bougainville islands are still the primary threat in our area. We've bombed the enemy airbases on these islands and will continue to do so until they are no longer a threat. The enemy has sent replacement aircraft to both Kahili and Balalle.  They've also sent destroyers and cruisers into the Bougainville area.

Enemy aircraft is always a threat is this area.

The Mission:

"THIS IS AN AIR-START MISSION"...

Good turn-out for mission - 34, we had 16 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - December 19th.

"Solomon Islands Campaign"
Mission - 35
Date: September 16th, 1943

After Action Report:

Great job escorting the bombers on the raid over Kahili.  The B-24's destroyed numerous aircraft and equipment on the ground. Our group destroyed over 15 enemy aircraft in the air. Our base was also strafed by enemy float planes, however we received very little damage.

The group's TBF's have also been upgraded to the TBF-1C. This new aircraft has a greater payload than our previous version and this new plane also can carry rockets. This new aircraft will be put into operation immediately.

The Sea-Bee's have also completed building a forward hospital base located just a 1/2 mile north of our airfield. The site also has a cozy sandy beach. The Doc's have sent a message that they and the nurses welcome the Black Sheep to a party they are hosting tonight.  :)

Intelligence:

The USAAF B-24 strike photo's showed that Kahili is currently not a threat. The runway and many of the enemy planes were either destroyed or are non-operational.

The Island of Balalle, however is operational, grid AS-35, on your map. This airstrip houses enemy fighters and bombers. AAA on Balalle is of medium strength at last reports.

Enemy aircraft is always a threat is this area. There are also enemy warships patrolling this area.

The Mission:

"THIS IS AN AIR-START MISSION"

We are going to attack the airstrip on Balalle, grid AS-35 on your map. We will use TBF's and SBD's to hit the airfield and F4U's to provide escort and CAP.

TBF's - arm with bombs and rockets. Attack the AAA, then hit parked aircraft.
SBD's - arm with bombs and hit the hanger and fuel facilities.

NOTAM's:

*All pilots to remain on same comms channel this mission.

*ALL AIRCRAFT ARE ZERO FUEL - MAKE SURE YOU PUT GAS IN YOUR PLANE

F4U's (1st Squad, seats 1-8)
TBF's (2nd Squad, seats 25-48)
