How about leaving the "Foe names" out of it completely....  just the distance icons.

A real pilot would never see his opponents name, and I don't want to know who I'm chasing or fighting anyway, beacause I'm sure some might act/fly differently when they know who they are challenging.

Just another 2 cents.

S! Mobes:

If we use the settings I recommended below, the FOE names won't show up until you're within 5 yards.  That's pretty close!  I recommend that we try tonight's "dry run" mission with those settings & see how everyone likes 'em.

Rgr that Moggs!  I wasn't sure how close the .05 was, but if it's that close, should be just fine... looking soooo forward to the dry run!!!!

Tx in advance for the hard work that is making this happen!!!

~S~!

Mobes.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

_AH_Moby

Regarding the Slot Campaign dry run we just flew earlier tonight....  Moggy, there were no icons seen by me or anyone on the blue side, (that I was aware of anyway)....  I got pretty close a few times to a few F4U's and no icons with names appeared.   For your info Sir!

You mean you had no FRIENDLY icons either?  Mine appeared normal.  As far as the enemy F4U's, you wouldn't have seen any pilot names unless you were within 5 yards of them.  Their numerical ID, though, should've been visible at 750m (.75 in game).  Did anyone else see anything different?

MISSION HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:  On 6 March 1943, R. Adm. Aaron ("Tip") Merrill led his TF68, consisting of 3x CL's & 3x DD's, into Kula Gulf to shell the Japanese airbase at Vila
(Kolombangara).  Merrill's TF encountered two IJN DD's bringing supplies into the gulf.  Both were
quickly sunk by USN radar-directed gunfire, and torpedoes from the US DD "Waller."
Four separate DD's from this TF were detached and shelled the IJN airfield at Munda.
The air actions in this mission supporting Merrill's sortie are fictional;  the rest is historically accurate.

S~.  i could see friendly labels. don't recall any enemy labels, but i don't think i was close enough to any enemy planes to see them.

"What the hell, let's see what happens"?  Me too.

WHOA!!!  Sorry Moggy!  I meant enemy icons, my bad, should have clarified a touch more......

Apologies!

S~. this was originally posted by moggy in reply to viper's post asking what causes some players to be kicked to the desktop in some missions.

--->  Moggy:
Yes, we lost a total of 3 pilots kicked to desktop.  That's too many.  If that happens during the campaign, it will not be a good thing.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?  (admin:  feel free to move this to the "Slot Operations" thread).   * end post*

the disconnect that happens just seems to happen randomly when we have a lot of guys in a mission, and it's usually after we've been in there for about an hour.   Skat is usually the host, on accounta he usually hosts the big missions... i'm pretty sure i've seen it happen when other guys are hosting, too though.

i seem to recall this happening ever since we've been flying big campaign missions..  large number of players, long mission.. a random number of players..sometimes 1 or 2.. sometimes more.. either get thrown to the 'Transferring Mission'  screen, or just get tossed all the way out of the game after getting well underway..

the random nature of it is gonna make it hard to track down.. i had it happen to me once a year or so ago.  Whoever got kicked last night could check their applications event log in windows and see if there is an error  showing up.. i doubt there will be, but it's worth a look.

the first thing that comes to me as a suggestion, is to try all joining by IP for the next one or two or three or four or five.. and see if it happens less with hyperlobby out of the  picture.

i was getting disconnected on game launch  once in a while  a couple months ago.. but that was when my modem was starting to flake out.

I,d also like to Add that this happened before the all in one install....But has it happened in 4.08?

_AH_*PODS*_RGAA

Yes it has happened in 4.08 ... the vmf campaign happened a few times ..... I recall it happening in all versions more or less... thinking it happens due to IL2 ... with the transfering of info back and forth between the host and the people connected to host ... the larger the numbers the more you see this disconnect or relaods. Be interesting to see if this happens with someone hosting with a stronger comp ... if that even matters? .... but thinking what i stated at beginning about the more people on and the transfering of onformation among comps has more to do with it and if it can be prevented by a stronger host comp or if its going to happen no matter what because of the numbers .... know what i mean? ... lol ... just a thought . Sorry I missed the "dry run" mission. I had a helluva bad day of nothing but bad news, starting with blatant spin control from my 401K fund manager. It went downhill from there. It was ready to spit blood by the time I logged on Ring's practice server.

After practicing with Ring and Gonzo and the guys I knew I was better off to leave it alone. If anyone thought I was upset, I was, but only with outside crap, not my buds in _AH. Best squad around!

How do you join a server by IP? I've always used hyperlobby.

_AH_BBQhead

S~.  To join by IP.. First take note of the host's IP address, usually posted next to his name in Ventilo.

Then launch your game and select Multiplayer from the menu, then click Join server.

you'll see a box for entering the IP.
by default you should see a :21000 already there. .. that's the port the game uses. Most guys delete the:21000 and use just the IP and have no problems.

Enter the IP and once the host has the room running,  click join server..
