S~ All,

In an effort to maximize squadron particapation and to let folks know when I'm going to run one of my coop's I've asked BBQ to set aside some time so that you guys know when I'm going to run one.  I asked for this time due to the length of most of my coops.  As many of you know my coops can run almost an hour or a bit more.  So I wanted to let you guys know when I was going to run them.  As a start I'm going to run one on Wensday nights.  The formate for the coops will be mostly from the allied side of things.  I won't have the breifing and ATC set-up's we use for our Tuesday night camapign missions, however, the missions I going to begin will follow a particular squadron through some of their most historic engagements.

So that being said, the first group I've opted to present will be the exploits of the US Navy, VF-17th, The famed "Jolly Rogers".

The "Jolly Rogers" began during World War II as Fighter Squadron 17 (VF-17) on January 1, 1943 under the command of LCDR Tom Blackburn.  The squadron was one of the first navy squadrons to fly the Vought F4U Corsair fighter.  Because their plane was called Corsair, VF-17's men wanted a squadron name that would correspond with that pirate theme.  They came up with the now-famous black flag with white skull and crossbones symbol and decided on the name "Jolly Rogers."  Thus, the legend was born.  VF-17 was only active from 1943 to 1944, but during the squadron's short life, it recorded the most kills for any navy squadron up to that point in the war, with 154 confirmed kills, and many other probable kills.

The Mission:

"Battle of the Solomon Sea"

On the 9th Tom Blackburn and Duke Henning flew to Munda for a Commander Air Forces Solomon Islands (ComAirSols) briefing.  Discussed at the meeting was a raid that took place on Nov 5th at Rabaul.  The raid had crippled several Jap naval vessels, but the brass still feared an enemy surface attack against the Torokina beachhead.

Another carrier air strike was proposed for the 11th, this time with five carriers. Once again AirSols would be tasked with providing fighter protection for the carriers, because the carrier fighters would be escorting the strike to Rabaul.  To provide maximum fighter protection while the carrier aircraft were away, the VF-17 was tasked with defense of the fleet.

VF-17 arrived on schedule over the fleet's carriers.  It was an exciting moment for Blackburn as Bunker Hill signalled "P C" ("Prep Charlie," meaning 'prepare to land'), then a single "C" - "Land!"  His squadron executed perfect touch-downs on the carriers.  While the Corsairs were serviced, the VF-17 pilots enjoyed a brief reunion with their shipmates as well as a delicious Navy breakfast.  Two hours later they were back in the air.

The U.S.S. Essex's radar picked up bogies - only 30 miles out and closing fast. The VF-17 went after them.  Blackburn heard "Tallyho! Zekes and Vals. Eleven o'clock."  Those were the last intelligible transmissions he heard; soon the fighter channel was jammed with rebel yells, war whoops, "Look at that flamer!" "Wow!" and other junk transmissions. (Lack of radio discipline was one of Blackburn's pet peeves.)  A confusing, wild, twisting, gut-wrenching dogfight ensued. Suddenly six Zekes were all over Blackburn, who jumped into the nearest cloud. He circled inside it long enough to get his heart rate and blood pressure down, then he nosed out of it.

Suddenly, BAM! BAM! BAM! He was hit! An agonized Rog Hedrick pulled up alongside to see how badly he had shot up his boss. He and his plane were okay but by now all were low on fuel. Blackburn headed for the barn.  The other pilots continued the fight and when the day was over VF-17 scored 18.5 confirmed kills.

Overall, the U.S. raid on Rabaul of Nov. 11th was decisive, the Japs lost 137 warplanes and suffered further damage to their ships in Rabaul's Simpson Harbor. They never again based large warships there.

Aircraft Seats = 32

Mission Length = Approx. 70 min.

S~ All,

Col. Hogan...I think we are going to test one of the three previous missions once we have all updated our Java files...also Archie has a line on a possible fix that we may test as well.  Thats about as much as I know.

_AH_BBQhead

S~.. Yep .. for testing i  would like to re run one of the slot missions after we make a change..update your java, and set network speed to 28.8...  and see how many guys get the boot..

if we fly a different sortie than we flew the first time.. it'll almost be a like a new mission..

_AH_Nimble

sound like an exciting mission dave... hope to be there too.........what day is the 21rst??? mon .tues ..dang Ill look on the calender

_AH_BBQhead

S~..

you can verify your version of java here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp  (Click "verify now" once you're there.)

That is also the link to where you can download whatever Java you need..( for the various Operating systems.. Vista, XP, Mac..)

the network setting of 28.8 is available in the game..

Launch offline, click "Hardware setup ".. then click "Network"..

Use the drop down and Select Modem 28.8.    Click Apply.  ( then click back)

Honestly this is a shot in the dark as to whether it will help.. but i don't see how it could hurt to try it.. Java is friendly enough and the network setting is a click or two to change back. if it turns out to be no help...

1.  I don't get home until 6:10

2.  IL-2 is a Java based game.  That said updating your Java is an old wives tale unless you mean copying the java.exe and the javaw.exe from your Windows\System32 folder to your IL-2 main\bin folder?  Is that what you mean?  I have never seen this make a difference yet I still do this.  What's your take on it?

3.  Running at 28.8.  Certain servers used to insist on this.  I generally never worried about it as all I had was 56k modem at the time.  I haven't seen this discussed.  It was maintained that if the more powerful connection connected at 28.8 then they wouldn't "hog" all of the bandwidth from the "dialups". Thus, when texture usage, read: "furballs" started there would be enough for all.  In the 2 year plus I have been at AH, BW has seldom been a problem.  This could be a good thing to try! Dave, your Florida connection doesn't do well here in the boonies of Idaho!

Interesting,
Duff

Awwww What the heck!  Update your Java as per BBQ then go to your IL-2 Install\bin folder find Java.exe and Javaw.exe and rename them to Java_old.exe and Javaw_old.exe and unzip these into the bin folder here's a link: Java_New

~S~ Re: Posts from AH_BBQhead, Zipzag and Duff4r.  I ain't going to attempt to do ANY of that stuff. I hit the wrong key and I am SOL for a week till some staff member takes their own time to fix it for me.    Nope.  Not me.
I love my country..It's the government I'm afraid of.

_AH_BBQhead

S~. the java version in the game is 1.3.. no need to change that..

don't rename anything in the game folder.. don't install anything into the game folder.. just update the version of java that runs on your system..  if you don't have java.. you can Download and install  it with just a click or two by going to the link i posted previously.. i always install it it on all my computers.. and i think i have been kicked form a mission ONCE in as long as we've been playing the game.

the connection setting is also just a click or two.. and instructions are also in my previous post.

updating java is an old wives tale?..  well.. once i install it on my computer.. it updates itself.. never had a problem with it.  don't know if the game will use the new version files or not... maybe that's what you meant..

as i mentioned earlier.. i don't know if it will help to fix the getting thrown problem or not.. as i've never been plagued with it..so i can't make a change and see if it fixes it on my system..

in reading over at the forums at UBI.. the getting kicked / memory problem is related to java...so what could it hurt to have the most current version of java in your system?

~S~  OK  BBQ...I went in to that web site to verify my Java and it went round and round and came up saying I had to put in a user name and password. Is that for AH or iL2 or what ?
