Sign In BEFORE you qual

Pilots attempting any Aces High qualifications must sign in to the Pilot Sign In thread on the day of and prior to attempting any qualification flights. If a pilot attempts multiple quals on the same day only one sign in for that day is required.

Pilot Wings Requirements

Awarded for completing the following in a P-51D-5NT without crashing whilst proudly wearing the pink trainer skin:

Take off and climb to 7,500m carrying 2x250lbs bombs.
Successful destruction of 3 ground targets with any ammo on board.
Carrying out a Horizontal 8 and demonstrating Slow Flight (less than 200kmh).
Completing 10 landings and take offs.

A pilot may also carry out this exam in other aircraft types but ONLY after having successfully gained the above qualification. The other aircraft types will then be listed under the Pilot Wings.

If an aircraft is unable to meet the above listed requirements (i.e. Bomb load, etc..), an alternate test may be given by an instructor with the permission of ACES HIGH Command Staff.

Instructor Pilot Wings Requirements

Awarded for completing the above exam on six different aircraft types including one multi-engine piston engine aircraft and one jet engine aircraft. When awarded, these overwrite the "Pilot Wings".

Command Pilot Wings Requirements

Awarded to qualified instructor pilots only for demonstrating leadership both in training and combat conditions. A pilot must be recommended for this award by his peers and approved by ACES HIGH Command Staff. When awarded, these overwrite the "Instructor Pilot Wings".

Bomber Pilot Wings Requirements

Awarded to any pilot that completes the four bombing missions ( 1 from each base) contained within the Aces High Bomber Qualification Mission. The Bomber Qualification Mission can be found in the zip mentioned above.

Note: No Player Map Icon must also be checked for the Aces High Bomber Qualification.

Carrier Pilot Wings Requirements

Awarded for completing the following in a FM-2 without crashing whilst proudly wearing the pink trainer skin:

Completing 10 landings and take-offs from a stationary carrier without crashing.

Initial carrier qualifications (in the FM-2) must be completed on the Carrier Qualification map.  In addition, the pilot trainee must demonstrate knowledge of proper carrier traffic pattern/approach protocols by performing the qualification from this pattern.

A pilot may also carry out this exam in other aircraft types but ONLY after having successfully gained the above qualification. The other aircraft types will then be listed under the Carrier Pilot Wings.

Carrier Instructor Pilot Wings Requirements

Awarded for completing the above exam on five different aircraft types including one Japanese aircraft and one British aircraft. When awarded, these overwrite the "Carrier Pilot Wings".

Additional Qualifications:

Rough Weather Carrier Qualification Requirements

Complete 5 landings and take offs without crashing in the wind and rain.

Night Carrier Qualification Requirements

Complete 10 landings and take offs without crashing on one of the two lit up carriers.

Moving Carrier Qualification Requirements

Complete 10 landings and take offs without crashing. Additionally, all take offs must make use of the catapult.

Combat Qualification Requirements

See the following thread for information on the requirements for the Combat Qual : http://aceshigh.ws/forum/index.php?topic=468.0 (http://aceshigh.ws/forum/index.php?topic=468.0)

Carrier Wing Devices

(R) (FC) (N) (M)

These four devices (R), (FC), (N) and (M) will be added below a pilot's carrier wings after the completion of the respective task.

(R) Signifies the pilot has completed at least one Rough Weather Carrier Qualification.
(FC) Signifies that a pilot has completed a carrier qualification in full cockpit settings.
(N) Signifies that a pilot has completed the Night Carrier Qualification.
(M) Signifies that the pilot has completed a Moving Carrier Qualification.

These devices will also be added beside the respective aircraft listed below the wing in which the respective task was carried out.

Land Wing Devices

These devices will be added beside the respective aircraft listed below the wing in which the respective task was carried out.

(C) Signifies the the pilot has completed the Combat Qualification in that aircraft.

Qual F.A.Q.

If I want to host a qual room or practice offline, What settings should I use?

The settings are the same for almost all quals. They are the AH standard settings we fly 99.9% of the time:

In the case of a Full Cockpit (FC) carrier qual, No External Views must also be checked.

For the Aces High Bomber Qualification, No Player Map Icon must also be checked.

Who is eligible to witness quals?

Any qualled pilot can witness any other pilot's qual with the exception of the first two, The P-51D-5NT land qual that earns a pilot his AH wings, and the FM-2 carrier qual that earns a pilot his carrier wings. Those two quals need to be witnessed by some one that has earned their instructor wings in the same qual. Meaning that if you only have your Carrier Instructor Wings, you can be a witness for the FM-2 but not the P-51D-5NT that would earn some one their AH wings. The P-51D-5NT land qual that earns the AH wings needs to be witnessed by some one that has their land Instructor Pilot Wings.

How do I report a qual I have witnessed?

Completed quals should be posted in the ACES HIGH PILOT QUALIFICATION THREAD on the AH forums. Be sure to list the specific aircraft designation and exactly what type of qual the pilot completed. The aircraft type alone may not denote the type of qual.

What if the plane I want to qual doesn't have the 2x250lbs bombs as a loadout option? Some planes offer loadouts that are clearly more than 500 lbs, others carry only bullets, and some offer loadouts with no weight specified.

Select the loadout that is at least 500 lbs.
If the 2x250lbs bomb loadout is not available but a heavier loadout is, then the heavier loadout must be used.
If the plane only carries loadouts that have no weights specified, the maximum loadout should be used.

Basically, if it's an option you must carry at least 500lbs of ordnance up to 7500 meters. More if that's the only option.
In rare instances, such as a plane that carries 12x100lbs bombs, you can drop 6x100lbs bombs after take off and before reaching 7500 meters. Since you still have at least 500lbs of ord on board, you are still within spec for the loadout/climb to altitude task.
In most cases, such as rockets only, you will need to carry the entire load to altitude.

If the loadouts are all less than 500lbs, select the maximum loadout.
If the only loadout options are default and empty, select default.

How much fuel should I take?

The amount of fuel is your choice. 100% is recommended but there is no required fuel load.

Can I land and refuel/rearm during my qual?

No.

Does it matter what order the tasks are completed?

Yes. You must carry your selected loadout to 7500 meters before doing any other tasks. After that the order of completion is at your discretion. The usual order of completion is to climb to 7500 meters, destroy three ground targets, perform maneuvers, then ten full stop landings and ten take offs.
However, some elect to perform maneuvers while descending from 7500 meters. This can be more difficult as you'll still be carrying ordnance in most planes but that option is allowed.

What if the plane I want to qual won't climb to 7500 meters?

If the plane cannot climb to 7500 meters, you can't qualify it.

What if the plane I want to qual doesn't have guns or carry any bombs or rockets?

If you cannot destroy three ground targets on the target range, that plane can't be qualified.

What if the plane I want to qual only carries torpedoes?

If you cannot destroy three ground targets on the target range, that plane can't be qualified.

What if I don't have time to complete my qual?

In most cases, you will need to start over if you don't complete a qual.

You should be aware of upcoming scheduled missions and not start a qual if you won't have time to finish.
The host of the qual room and/or the ATC is generally responsible for stating "No more quals." at the appropriate time but ultimately it's up to you as the qualifier to be aware of how much time you will need and how much time is available before starting.
On rare occasions, you might be given permission by the senior member present at the time to continue at a later time from where you are in the qual but those instances are the exception, not the rule and will be considered on a case by case basis.

Can I qual Floatplanes?

Yes. All requirements are the same, however, since floatplanes air start, you will need to land first, then start your climb.

The first landing before your climb can be made in the lake near the main field. Your 10 landings and take offs must be made at the landing area for floatplanes in the waterway just south of the target range. That waterway that is just between the southern coast of the target range and the northern coast of the mainland. Since float planes don't really come to a full stop the rule instead is to land, reduce speed to nearly a stop, then turn 180 degrees and take off.

Can I carrier qual a non-carrier aircraft?

Yes, you can earn a carrier qualification for any aircraft you can get on and off a carrier deck. In the case of the Moving Carrier Qualification map a seperate spawn is provided with all aircraft available and a second carrier (USS Essex, CV-9) is present for these 'oddball' quals.

When should I have my wingtip smoke and/or nav lights on?

Nav lights should be on anytime you are qualling.

Wingtip smoke should only be turned on during the two required maneuvers - The Horizontal Eight and the Slow Turn.

Some planes do not have nav lights, so in those instances wingtip smoke should be turned on for the entire qual.

Having Nav lights on or wingtip smoke for those planes that don't have nav lights, indicates to others in the room that you are qualling and are not a target.

What is a horizontal eight and what's the difference between a pass and fail for that maneuver?

A horizontal eight is a loop with a 180 degree aileron roll done in the second half or diving side of the loop, followed by a second loop with another 180 degree aileron roll done again in the second half or diving side of the second loop. When done correctly, your final heading will be the same as your initial heading.

If you stall or don't end with the same heading as you started with, that will be considered a 'fail', and you'll need to try again.
Diving to gain speed before pulling into the first loop is expected but you must also fly level for a few seconds after the dive before the first loop.

See this thread for more information on executing the Horizontal Eight : http://aceshigh.ws/forum/index.php?topic=44.0 (http://aceshigh.ws/forum/index.php?topic=44.0)

Is the Horizontal Eight the same as a Cuban Eight?

No. They are similar but for a Cuban Eight the aileron roll is done during the climbing part of the loops. In the Horizontal Eight the aileron roll is done during the diving part of the loops.

What is a slow turn and what is the difference between a pass and a fail for that maneuver?

A slow turn can be done two ways. In both cases, you will need to be flying slower than 200kmh for the entire maneuver.
You can either turn 180 degrees to the right or left or you can turn 90 degrees right and then 90 degrees left.
In both cases you can use flaps and/or gear at your discretion but you must stay below 200kmh AND maintain your altitude with a minimal variance up or down.
Stalling or excessive increases or decreases in altitude will be considered a fail and you will need to try again.

Is the slow turn the same as a flat turn?

No, you can bank your plane as much or as little as you want during the slow turn.

What if I crash part way through my qual. Can I continue where I left off?

No, you must start the whole thing over.

What if my game crashes or some one crashes into me?

If your qual is interrupted by a technical problem within the game or another pilot's carelessness, you will be permitted to respawn and continue from where you were. This does not include your phone ringing, pizza delivery, mormons, jehova's witnesses, vikings at your door, your cat jumping on your keyboard, gastro intestinal distress, hallucinations, your wife or girlfriend (or both) walking naked through the room, some one stealing your off road vehicle and you needing to grab your gun and chase them, meteors falling through your roof, SKAT playing his Justin Beiber albums loudly or any other kind of distractions in your real life environment. You can land, deal with real life, then take off and continue a qual though.

Can I use the catapult to take off during a carrier qual?

For a standard Carrier Qual, Night Carrier Qual or Rough Carrier Qual the catapult cannot be used. If you accidentally lock into the catapult, that takeoff will not count. The Moving Carrier Qual on the other hand, requires the use of the catapult for every takeoff.
