And so it begins!!!

Quick question to the group....

I am re-working the stats for this campaign...  Are there any fields or data that you would like to track?  Perhaps some that we no longer wish to track?

Are we liking tracking "survival rates"?

Let me know.

Nice turn-out for mission - 01, we had 16 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - March 20th.

"Sicily Campaign"
Mission - 02
Date: June 11th, 1943

After Action Report:

Great job hitting Pantelleria. The airfield looks like it's out of action. The group also sank a destroyer and cargo ship in the harbor leaving it useless.  Additionally, the group accounted for 20+ enemy planes destroyed.

Intelligence:

This morning the British intend to launch an invasion against the island of Pantelleria. A heavy cruiser, two destroyers, and troop ships are in position to launch their landing craft. The beach landings look to take place at approximately 07:45 hours.

The island is still supported by enemy aircraft from Sicily. AAA is still a threat through-out the island.

The Mission:

A-36 Apache (P-51A) - all squads, will provide CAP for the invasion fleet.

"Sicily Campaign"
Mission - 03
Date: June 15th, 1943

After Action Report:

Welcome to the island of Pantelleria ...

This is going to be one of our staging bases for operations against the enemy held Island of Sicily. Well done covering the British invading force.  They were able to secure the island the very same day with minimal casualties. Our group was able to destroy over 40+ enemy aircraft.

Intelligence:

Good morning Gentlemen ... this morning we have orders to attack the enemy held airfield and train depot, in and near, the town of Castelvetrano, grid BU-26, pad 3, on your map.

The Castelvetrano area AAA is of medium strength.

* Be advised there are enemy convoys and supply trains moving in and out Castelvetrano frequently.

The Mission:

1st Squad (A-36 Apache / P-51A) - will cover the strike aircraft.

As far as the skin to select, that's up to the player. As a recommendation (my opinion only) skins by vpmedia are of the time period we are flying in.

Here is a decent link with info about the A-36 Apache (for those who are interested)  :

http://www.456fis.org/A-36A_APACHE.htm

For those into historical accuracy on your skins (DW) , take note that the range of serial numbers
is between    42-83663   and   42-84162.

Anyhow, there's a bit of info there to digest.

I thought the same thing, then I saw the Mk.Is don't have .50s, they have 6x.303s. They can add 2x.50s in the wings in addition to the .303s but still. I think we'd prefer 4x.50s to 6x.303s+2x.50s.

Great turn-out for mission - 03, we had 18 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - April 3rd.

"Sicily Campaign"
Mission - 04
Date: June 18th, 1943

After Action Report:

Great Job hitting the airfield and rail yard. Those facilities will not be usable for enemy before the upcoming operation.  The group also claimed 15 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air. Our airfield was also raided by the enemy. We were not hit very hard, however, raids of this sort will most likely continue as the invasion draws near.

Intelligence:

As we've been applying pressure on the enemy in Sicily, they've starting operating more frequent air patrols. Today's target areas are the airfield, harbor, and fuel facilities in the town's of Milo and Marsala, BT-25/26, on your map.

The target areas are protected by AAA (med. strength).

* Be advised there are enemy convoys and supply trains moving in and out Marsala.

The Mission:

1st Squad (A-20) - will arm with bombs. Target the enemy airfield near Milo (BT-26, pad 6).

2nd Squad (A-20) - will arm with bombs. Target the rail yard and fuel storage areas located within Marsala (BT-25, pad 8).

3rd Squad (P-51A) - will cover the strike aircraft.

Wood,

I've thought about this for a bit now and think I'll send out a photo recon photo, however not on this mission.  During the last mission the bomber guys (2nd & 3rd) did not have the advantage of a photo. As this upcoming mission has 1st squad flying bombers all squads will have completed a mission without the use of a recon photo.

So missions going forward after mission #4 will have the use of a recon photo if the mission calls for bombers.

Another note on what we were talking about with the A-36's gun armament. I was just flipping through a book with a big section on P-51s and their variants and they mentioned that most A-36s has their nose guns removed in the field. So the four .50s does seem closer to reality.

The harbor can be hit by either 1st or 2nd squads as it is a secondary target and if they have bombs left to attack with.

FYI Skinners , historical squadron codes for the 1st FG are as follows :
27th FS    "HV"
71st FS    "LM"
94th FS    "UN"

Also , the record of USAAF Serial Numbers for all aircraft flown during WW2 , if correct , suggests that the P-38s flown by the 1 FG were mostly P-38G-10-LOs in the serial number range 42-12870 to 42-12966.
The P-38G-5_LOs were mostly assigned to the 82nd FG (NWE) and the 49th FG (New Guinea).

That is interesting. They looked familiar , but they didn't twig my aging memory bells.
Shame on me for forgetting Zemke's Wolfpack.

My (main) source for Sqdn Code info is Combat Codes - A Full Explanation and Listing of British , Commonwealth and Allied Air Force Unit Codes Since 1938
by Vic Flintham and Andrew Thomas  Publisher Pen and Sword Aviation c2003.

This publication also lists the (better known) 56th FG Codes as you noted.
It seems that because the 1 FG was activated in the ETO earlier as part of the 8th Air Force  , then detached to the 12th for the Operation Torch landings in the MTO (and the 2 units were not active in the same theatre at the same time) that the 56th picked up the 1sts Sqdn Codes when they were activated in the ETO in Jan 1943 ( the 1 FG had been in the MTO since Nov 1942).

Similar thing with the 31st FG who's spitfires we'll be flying later on. They started in the ETO then transferred to the MTO. Later the 78th FG used some of the same squadron codes in the ETO.

Good turn-out for mission - 08, we had 17 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - May 8th.

"Sicily Campaign"
Mission - 09
Date: July 7th, 1943

After Action Report:

Good job hitting the enemy at Agrigento.  The port and airfield are no longer operational.  The enemy will not be able to use them before the invasion. AND ... an excellent team effort knocking out the enemy destroyer, that ship took six bomb hits before she went down !!!

Intelligence:

Today the target is a fighter sweep over the Comiso area.  We've received a report of large enemy aircraft formations staging near this area. AAA at Comiso is considered heavy, with large AAA guns, high altitude 88mm type, as well as, low level 20mm flak guns. It's believed that the enemy may know of the invasion and are reinforcing the southern coast of the island.

The Mission:

This is a fighter sweep. Our patrol area is along the southern coast from Comiso (grid CC-20, pad 9) to Pachino (grid CE-20, pad 3). Engage and destroy any enemy aircraft encountered.

Was going through a PDF of a book and saw this :

Pretty interesting, shows the variety of types of Spit they were flying.

In another book it mentions the 308th FS flew a mixture of Vs and VIIIs, while the other two squadrons in the 31st FG had a mix of Vs and IXs. So I guess with MK.VIIIs that puts us specifically in the 308th FS.

Thanks DW.

Interesting.
My initial plunge into the 31st FG shows that the group flew SpitVs and IXs (307th FS) but not VIIIs.
I'm going to delve a little deeper.

For general info , the 3 Sqdns of the 31st in this time period were :
307th FS  Sqdn Codes MX
308th FS  Sqdn Codes HL
309th FS  Sqdn Codes WZ

From what I've read, Mk.VIIIs started to be used in the MTO in June of 43. I wasn't sure if maybe the american's got theirs later but one website does mention the 308th getting some Mk.VIIIs in the latter part of May before the operations against Pantelleria.

This is what I have found if anyone is interested in historical representation.
Note that the serials I uncovered did not have dates of acquisition , so some of the conclusions are presumptive on my part , though based on "likely" historical truth...make of it what you will.

31st Fighter Group Spitfire Serial Numbers

This list is not complete , but is all I could track down so far.

Spit MkVB
AB811 , AD187 , BL338 , BM371 , BM511 , BM635 , EN748 , EN838 , EN847 , EN909 , EP179 , EP971 , ER130

Spit MkVC
ES182 , ES340 , JK609 , JK707 , JK870

Spit MkIX
EN255 , EN307 , EP615 , JL253 , MA616 , MH999

Spit MkVIII
JF340 , JF660

Serials with unidentified Types
ER187 , R6835 , R6895 , W3370

That Flight Ops Board that DW put up is really interesting.
Too bad it wasn't the one from June !
I concur that the MkVIIIs were specific to the 308th , which puts my original numbers off a bit.
Regarding the Serials to unidentified Types I found the following info :
1)R6835 and R6895 Were MkIas , and crossed paths with the 31st FG during their conversion to SPits in Mid 1942 at an RAF OTU , probably no.61. These Spits never left England.
2)ER187 was a MkVB and was the personal aircraft of Capt Frank Hill , 309th FS in May 1943.
I found no info as to when he upgraded aircraft.
3) W3370 was a VB assigned to the 307th FS on 20 Apr 1942 , and was transferred to 350 Sqdn RAF which in Sept 1942 was based at RAF MArtlesham Heath , then RAF Redhill , so it seems likely that this Spit never left England either.

The Spit VIII is listed AFTER the MkIX , because in production it actually
appeared after the MkIX. The MkVIII was on the drawing board in late 1941 when the disparity between the MkV and the FW190A forced the action of marrying the existing Spit V airframe with the next series Merlin 60/70 series (intended for the MkVIII) : the MkIX was the result.
Ultimately , the MkIX was so successful that the production run for the MkVIII was reduced in favour of more MkIXs.

This is a list of 31 Aircraft Serial Numbers.
This number is a little light for a normally equipped fighter group , which should show out from 12-16 AC per Sqdn , or a total of 36-48 AC.
Because the MTO was considered a "Secondary" Theatre of Operations , the equipment allocation would nomally reflect this by an allocation of less than front line aircraft types , or reduced numbers of such.
If it is approximately representative of the numbers of aircraft available to the 31st FG before Operation Husky in July 1943 (incidentally the MkVIII was not available ANYWHERE until June 1943) , then the representative proportions of the types of Spitfires available at this time in the 31st FG should be (fractions rounded) approximately (based on 36 aircraft allocated to the group) :
Spit VB    40% (I rounded the fractions down for this type as it was the oldest available , and likely the first to be phased out)
Spit VC Tropical 20%
Spit IX 20%
Spit VIII 20% (personally I believe this to be high at this time due to the aircraft only being available for 1 month anywhere , but there is some anecdotal evidence that the 31st flew these aircraft prior to Husky , as DW has indicated)
This would break down to the following total number of available airframes :
SpitVB x 15
SpitVC Trop x 7
SpitVIII x 7
SpitIX x 7

Adjusted Numbers for the 308th FS.
Eliminating the MkIXs from the mix , and keeping the proportions of MkVBs , VCs, and MkVIIIs in keeping with the group ratios of older vs newer models 60%:40% , we get a distribution of :
Spit VB  40%
Spit VCTrop 20%
Spit VIII 40%

If we looked at this proportionally for a normal AH mission turnout of ~20 pilots , the airframe allocation available would be :
SpitVB        x 8
SpitVC Trop   x 4
SpitVIII      x 4
SpitIX        x 4

or in terms of Aces High Turnout Numbers (approx) based on 20 Pilots...
Spit VB               x 8
Spit VC               x 4
Spit VIII              x 8

I don't expect any changes to be made in DealnDave's Campaign , I just thought if the numbers were interesting
to me , they might also be to csomeone else.

Yeah, the deployment of IXs and VIIIs to the MTO was not done on the basis of converting whole squadrons immediately but rather spreading the wealth around so as many units as possible had some of the newer type to fly top cover for the Vs. Because the Mk.VIIIs had integral dust filters they were earmarked for use in the MTO and Far East, they didn't serve in western europe.

When I first saw Dave's planeset with the MK.VIIIs I thought a similar thing, that a mixture of Vs and VIIIs could be fielded. But I think he went a good route by just going all Mk.VIIIs. It simplifies things, the Mk.Vs I think are a little underwhelming in this game and it avoids anyone feeling like they got stuck with a Vc (let alone a Vb) while other guys are zipping around in VIIIs or IXs.

LOL.  Last mission, between the lag from the paratroopers and my fabulously inconsistent internet speeds, I got to see something in game I've never seen before.
I thought the lag had cleared when I saw a 190 zoom from underneath to in front and slow to normal speed so I started to close in on it. Seemed to be running pretty smoothly now.   Got close, checked behind and around me one more time before going to the gunsight and pulling the trigger, started firing away... and firing and firing.. and firing..out of ammo.. was about to, or maybe had started to break off and turn  for home but  then I saw across the top of my screen it said I was Killed. I didn't feel dead. I hadn't seen any flack coming up, didn't hear any bullet hits, or see any go by..?? wiggled my stick a bit, it was still working and thought "no i'm not?" I heard me say Whatthe?  as I do from time to time..  and then  KABOOM!  exploded.  good times good times... Gotta love this game.   (kooky)

I won't be able to do anything skin wise for the B-25s. I think I have some good templates I got from Jarink but I've never touched them yet. So, I got nothin.

I still haven't done the A-20s, are we due to fly those again during the campaign, Dave?

Looks like for the next few missions we are in P-51A's, then we transition to P-40's for a bit, however on Mission 19 we get A-20's once again, we will also have them during missions 21-23.

Glad we got all that figured out here instead of on comms while trying to get the mission started.   I'll probably come back to read this again just to feel the love because that's some classic AH type bust yer balls stuff right there. I wasn't even a part of it and even my boys feel like they've been bounced a bit because I read DW's question and it seemed pretty reasonable to me so I looked for the answer and..  :surprised-041:, well played.

And see...still the always elusive answers are shrouded in the deepest secrecy...

More to follow I'm sure!

The result of this rivalry ... is that the enemy is now on the run.  They are being pushed into a corner and now are beginning to evacuate Sicily, using the port at Messina, to move to mainland Italy.

S~ All,

I'm on my way for vacation flying out on this coming Tuesday morning.  :)  I'll be away for the last three missions of the Sicily Campaign, be fret not, I've sent Jack the last three missions so there won't be any issues.

When I get back I'll put together the awards ceremony mission.

We will be off to the Philippines for our next campaign, unless someone else has a campaign ready and wants to run it.  :)
