Two things to mention on the Horizontal Eight.

Positions #2 and #4 must be inverted.. pilots tend to roll the aircraft too soon, it needs to be a distinct inverted flight, then roll.

Secondly, there can be little to no lateral movement of the aircraft. Ideally, it should be performed over a runway to verify.

We always fly quals with nav lights and tip smoke on.. you should be able to chase the tail, thats what we use to judge the lateral movement.
