The Sicilian Campaign
Mission #2:
Spaatz's Heros
July 14th 1943

Overview: As you're all aware we lost only a single B-25 in yesterdays battle for Comiso. Unfortunately
it was crewed by Lieutenant General Carl Spaatz and five other brave crewmen. They were shot down behind
enemy lines but were able to radio for help and bail out. They were quickly captured by German forces and were
brought deep behind enemy lines for interrogating. A plan has been formulated by command to rescue Spaatz
and his crew. They are being held in a small camp on the North East side of Licata Airfield and at dawn they will
execute their escape plan. Apparently there are three ME-410's parked very close to the camp. Spaatz and his
men will break out of the camp and commandeer three 410's to make their escape back to Comiso. This will be
one for the history books that's for sure.

Mission Brief:
Something you're all not use to but this mission must be timed perfectly or Spaatz wont stand a chance of getting
away from scrambling fighters at the airbase. It will require some fancy flying behind enemy lines, great teamwork
and wingmanship. Every roll in this mission is important for its success, without teamwork Spaatz's escape may
fail and we can't afford this. I don't want to see anyone circling the airbase to form up or waiting on the runway,
everyone start your engines and fly fast and low.

P-38 Flight One will be the first to take off and fly as fast as they can at low level from Comiso strait at Licata
Airfield. Bypass any targets on the way, you are only here to insure the escape goes smoothly. You should arrive
over the airfield just as Spaatz's and his crew are rolling on the runway, you need to destroy the hangers and
aircraft on the field with rockets as they are escaping to slow any attempt by the Germans to scramble fighters.
Don't linger because I'm sure the explosions will wake up any German forces at the base. Follow Spaatz's back across
friendly lines then help anyone in the area get back as well. Remember your primary mission is to insure Spaatz's survival.

P-38 Flight Two will fly alongside flight one but upon reaching the port of Gela will bomb the port and then remain in the
vicinity to provide cover for the A-20s and Spaatz's retreat from Licata Airfield, which is only a short flight West of Gela.

A-20's will fly in on the deck up along the coast and destroy any ships found off the coast of Gela,
they will tear our retreating planes to shreds including Spaatz if they are given a second chance to ready for incoming
planes. These ships must be sunk because Spaatz is unaware of their location and it will force everyone to take a
longer overland route which will be suicide after the Germans have been awaken.

P-51's will fly air support for the whole operation. This is a very important roll to this mission because if the 38's,
A-20's and Spaatz are jumped by German fighters at low altitude it will be a turkey shoot, so be sharp. You will be
the last to take off so fly toward the port of Gela at full speed up the coast and patrol the area for enemy fighters
coming in. Insure Spaatz's escape!

*Late Addition*

A lone C-47 will be flown by Doc with P-38 flight one and land at Licata Airfield just as Spaatz is making it to his plane.
He will drop a few troops on the runway to help hold off any German ground troops on the base to insure Spaatz makes
it to the planes safetly then take off again and fly back with Spaatz. Pay no attention to Doc, hes on his own for this one.
Go Doc go!
