I would say the P51 was better simply because it was easier to build and maintain.

For the fighter bomber role, the P38 was superior.

personally, the P-51 is supreme.

You are correct Woody, the P51 was not in the fight in the earlier part of the war thus its statistics could not be countered against much of the P38's actions. The thread below explains a lot of the
P38 and P51 involvement. The P51 finally became the go to fighter. The P38 still had its place up to the end of WWII. In Box, I have no doubt that Both the P51 and P38 can compliment each
other in the right conditions. I just wanted to rattle your cage a little as I know your a passionate Mustang Driver. :)
