HEY! I resemble that statement.

Good turn-out for mission - 24, we had 19 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - October 10th.

"Solomon Islands Campaign"
Mission - 25
Date: June 12th, 1943

After Action Report:

Well done hitting the enemy Anchorage at Vura Bay. One cruiser and three destroyers were sunk or heavily damaged. At any rate those ships are out of the action as we continue Operation Toenails.

Intelligence:

The enemy is stirring like a hornet's nest since our raid on their anchorage. They have stepped-up their air operations throughout the New Georgia area. We can expect more enemy raids of the Russell Islands.  We've received another submarine report that the enemy is sending, at least, two large aircraft formations down the "slot".  They are on their way once again to hit us here in the Russell's.

Our radar has picked up the 1st enemy formation in grid BX-15.  Altitude 6000 ft, speed 180 mph, course 130 degrees.

The Mission:

Scramble ... Scramble ... Scramble ...

Enemy planes are approaching from the north-west. Intercept enemy planes in grid CA-13.

P-38's hit the enemy bombers.
F4U's take care of the enemy fighters.

NOTAM's:

*All pilots to remain on same comms channel during this mission.

F4U's (1st Squad, seats 9-16)
P-38's (2nd Squad, seats 1-8)
F4U's (3rd Squad, seats 17-24)
P-38's (Spare's, HQ & Guests, seats 25-28) - AIR-START, zero fuel at this time

Good Luck ...

Having the F4U's fly ahead and sweep the fighters seemed to have worked out really well last time.

Remember the cardinal rule guys, do not turn fight with zeroes. As aggressive as we can turn, an AI zero can do it double or triple. Lets keep our speed up so we can drag and bag as needed. If you are defensive try a really tight barrel roll. Almost an aileron roll with a little bit of corkscrew, they seem to have trouble leading you enough while following you through it. If it really goes sideways, the deck is your friend.

Great turn-out for mission - 24, we had 20 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - October 17th.

"Solomon Islands Campaign"
Mission - 26
Date: June 30th, 1943

After Action Report:

Nice Job hitting the enemy bombers.  Once again none of the bombers reached their targets "and" once again we received no damage.  We've also received the new and upgraded Dauntless SBD-5, replacing the SBD-3 model. These aircraft will be part of today's mission.

Intelligence:

Good morning Gentlemen ... "Operation Toenails", is in full swing now. The Marines are hitting the beach at Segi Point on the east-end of New Georgia, grid BO-18, pad 2, on your map. Segi Point is an active enemy fighter airstrip. Enemy aircraft patrol this area often. With our troops hitting their beach, there is no doubt that the enemy will have fighters in this area.

There are also reports of minor naval activity in this area. The latest reports state: a single, "Shiga Escort", is docked nearby the airstrip and, there are armed enemy river boats that patrol this area on a regular basis.

The Mission:

We are going to strike the enemy airstrip at Segi Point, as well as, cover the Marines landing on the beach.

SBD's - will arm with bombs and attack the airstrip and any naval craft in the area.

F4U's - will provide CAP for the strike aircraft, as well, as, cover the beach landings.

NOTAM's:

"ALL" ... aircraft to rendezvous at West Bay, grid CB-13, pad 4, on your map, then proceed onto the target area.

*All pilots to remain on same comms channel this mission.

F4U's (1st Squad, seats 9-16)
F4U's (2nd Squad, seats 17-24)
SBD's (3rd Squad, seats 1-8, 25-32)
SBD's (Spare's, HQ & Guests, seats 33-40) - AIR-START, zero fuel and ammo at this time

Good Luck ...

My bad DW ... should of warned you, but in truth I didn't know about the new SBD until I posted the new mission brief.  :)

I'd suggest the bombers do their best to remain together for the entirety of the mission. If they are all in one place, all the fighters can be in one place too. We're pretty good at remaining cohesive from takeoff to target but we tend to get strung out in singles and pairs coming off target. That usually results in some guys having fighter cover and some not. Even if you are out of ammo or damaged it will be safer to stay with the group. Only if you have some kind of time sensitive damage like a failing engine or a fuel leak that won't seal should you make an immediate run for friendly lines.

Good point DW. Let's try that next time we have bomber duty.

Took Archie home early last night due to a fuel leak.

You took me home early because you thought I put out on the first date.
