Awesome turn-out for mission - 05, we had 21 pilots altogether !!!  Here is the next briefing to be flown on Tuesday - October 23rd.

"Philippine's Campaign - Leyte"
Mission - 06 - Battle for Samar & Taffy 3
Date: October 25th, 1944 (09:00 hrs)

After Action Report:

Good work on hitting the enemy task force. The group sank the enemy battleship Mushasi, the sister ship of the Yamato. The group also sank two destroyers.

In the early hours of this morning, our Navy engaged the enemy in what is now being called, "The Battle of Surigao Strait". The US Navy used six battleships, cruisers, and destroyers to decimate the enemy fleet. The enemy lost six ships altogether, including 3 destroyers, 2 cruisers, and a battleship (Fuso).

Our air group has been transferred to the Taffy battle group, and further assigned to Taffy 3 for this next operation.

Intelligence:

Good Morning Gentlemen ...

Welcome to Taffy 3 ... the force is comprised of 6 escort carriers, 4 destroyers, and 6 escort destroyers. Your air group has been assigned to the following ships: the USS KitKun Bay, the USS Princeton, and the USS San Jacinto.

We've received submarine reports of a large enemy battle group steaming from the San Bernardino Straight, north of Samar. The enemy force was reported to be turning south, heading in our direction. The enemy battle force is comprised of two battleships, one was identified as the Yamato, 2 cruisers, and 4 destroyers.

We've sent a emergency message to Adm. Halsey for assistance, however, the TF-38 battle group is too far out of range to help us. The last sighting of the enemy group was in grid BZ-37, pad 2. The heading at that time was 135 degrees at 20 knots. It's possible that enemy aircraft maybe enroute to attack our ships, however, we have nothing on radar at this time.

The Mission:

We are sending everything we have to locate and engage the enemy battle group. Search for the group, flying a approach starting at grid CA-36, pad 5, then turn and fly north-west to grid BZ-37, pad 2, on your map. After the group makes contact and completes your attacks on the enemy's ships ... proceed to land at Tacloban airfield, grid BW-31, pad 2.

The group will be overflying an enemy held airfield located in grid BY-35, pad 3, on Samar. Attack and strafe this airfield on the way to Tacloban.

Airfield RECON Photo:

1st Squad (FM-2) - arm with bombs.  Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the destroyers. Also, provide CAP for the strike aircraft.
2nd Squad (TBF) - arm with torpedoes. Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the battleships. After your attacks on the enemy ships, attack and strafe this airfield in grid BY-35, pad 3.
3rd Squad (TBF) - arm with torpedoes. Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the battleships. After your attacks on the enemy ships, attack and strafe this airfield in grid BY-35, pad 3.
HQ & Guests (TBF) - arm with torpedoes. Attack the enemy battle group. The primary targets are the cruisers. After your attacks on the enemy ships, attack and strafe this airfield in grid BY-35, pad 3.

Notams:

*All pilots to use same comms channel this mission.
*All deck aircraft have 1% fuel at this time.

1st Squad (FM-2) - seats 49-56
2nd Squad (TBF) - seats 1-24
3rd Squad (TBF) - seats 25-48
HQ & Guests (TBF) seats 57-68, AIR - START, zero fuel

Good Luck ...

I figured FM-2s meant CVEs. Did you have to substitute the Princeton and San Jacinto for CVEs cause of space problems?

Too bad we don't get to land on them.

I was able to use the San Jacinto and the Princeton for the mission. Eight TBF's are able to fit on their desks, however the spawn location has them in the center of the flight deck, see the attach photo. That means launching from the single catapult will be a must. This will extend our mission time a bit. We will also have to take our time getting off the decks as all the deck aircraft will only have one catapult to launch from.

Squad leaders should take the last assigned aircraft and assume ATC roles for launch, ensuring their squads get off the decks safely, thus limiting re-starts. Just my two cents on this mission.  :)

Hmm, yeah CVLs require some guys to make a pretty hard left hand turn to get to the catapult. Turning on deck becomes harder the faster a ship is going, since we're using catapults anyways maybe have the ships move a little slower? If you haven't already done that.

FM-2s are limited to 100lb bombs. I wonder how many a/c it will take to sink a DD. Can we sink even one if all of 1st dogpiles it? Gonna require some testing.

Throw in a couple of CVL's in the practice room, just a thought.

Yeah I have two CVEs in there, actually maybe three... Could add CVLs but I'm not sure if the dogfight spawn points would give the same effect though.

A better option might be to forgo part the dogfight practice in favor of a COOP for practicing takeoffs. Just takeoff and then restart it a few times for practice.

Hmm, I'll change the Yamatos to carriers in the practice room.

Then I will give SKAT extra tutoring on torpedo dropping and comment on every aspect of his attack runs until he is up to snuff.

Ah, life is good.

I'm beyond "PISSED" ... this has now been "TWO" weeks in a row that our Hawaiian power company has lost power, AND they have done it on a Tuesday at the same time of day !!!

They claim that fallen trees were to blame, however during both instances there was no rain or high winds. I called and voiced my frustration with their company in a very loud and military manner, the poor young lady at the other end of the phone had her ear melted off the side of her head ... I think.

ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
