                      AH_Whistle for "Tiffy"  Campaign

From D-Day, 6 June 1944, Tactical Air Force fighter-bombers played a pivotal role in Allied battlefield success. Through the initial fraught days of the Normandy bridgehead, the titanic struggle to close the Falaise Gap, the muddy polders of the Scheldt Estuary, and the final euphoric liberation of the Netherlands, Canadian soldiers in need of aerial support knew they could always "whistle for Tiffy". Canadian pilots served with distinction in both the RCAF and multinational RAF squadrons of the renowned 2nd Tactical Air Force. Buttressed by an infectious joy of flying and incredible camaraderie, the Tactical Air Force took full advantage of their hard-won aerial superiority in Normandy and Northwest Europe. As soon as the army located a target, Hawker Typhoon fighter-bombers - along with Supermarine Spitfires and other aircraft converted to ground support roles - dive-bombed, rocketed, and strafed German tanks, transport, and troop concentrations.  The young men on both sides suffered heavy casualties. The Germans lost tens of thousands of troops and vehicles to Typhoons, while Fighter Command endured 2,500 losses in the final 16 months of the war, including 151 Typhoon pilots killed in Normandy alone.

These missions are kind of based on fact, as factual as IL-2 FMB will allow and to make each mission more interesting/fun .

There are 25 missions, in each mission choose either a Spit or a Typhoon.  I will count Kills and destroyed objects.

Couple bits of info about the canadian typhoons, they were formed into 143 Wing. The three RCAF squadrons were :

438 Squadron





439 Squadron





440 Squadron






They were joined later on by an RAF squadron when they brought the wings up to four squadron strength, the RAF squadron took on a fighter role providing top cover for the rest of the wing.

Before the invasion it was thought that typhoons would switch between bombs and rockets depending on the nature of the target. In practice it was found that installing\removing the eight rocket rails took too long and time was a critical factor in close air support. The time between the troops calling for a strike and when the aircraft arrived overhead had to be minimized. So what the RAF did was assign typhoon wings to use one or the other, bombs or rockets, with targets being sent to the available wing that could best deal with it. This had the advantage of allowing squadrons to concentrate on strafing\rocket or strafing\bombing skills rather than all three. Thus 143 Wing became a "Bombphoon" wing, specializing in dive bombing with 500 or 1000 lb bombs.

They never quite mastered the art of drainage though..
