Was up in Gatineau today, the RAF's Red Arrows were there doing a display.

The Vintage Wings hangar was open and their corsair from the above posts was there in a state of a disassembly. She's bent in all kinds of different directions.  :sad-056:

Just got back from Las Vegas and watched the first race of NASCAR Chase. Had the time of my life. Karen encouraged me to go and do the Richard Petty's NASCAR Experience, were you drive a 600 HP NASCAR race car. I bought 4 8 minute sessions on the track. you drive alone in the car with a spotter telling you what rpm to maintain, depending on how well you listen determines the how fast your permitted. I wanted to drive the number 78 Truex's old car but someone just wrecked into turn 2 wall. Oh well so I drove the number 4 car Harvick's for 4 sessions of 8 minutes each. Once you pull away from the pits the time starts, you have a spotter that talks you threw it all. * minutes got me 6 laps each time for the first two sessions and 7 for the last two sessions. After each lap you are told to increase the RPM. I started with 4200 and moved up to 4900 my first two 8 minute sessions the last two 8 minute sessions they bumped the rev limiter to 5400. The spotter and the crew chief were so impressed they left me alone to drive as fast and as close to the white line as I felt safe doing, I was alone on the track as well. I hit a top speed of 168.55 and an average speed of 155. Which was fastest on Sunday. The heat was so hot when I got out of the car the helper Dressed in the blue shirt he garbed my arm to stable me. I wasnt accustomed to the G's and the affects. Afterwards my shoulders neck and legs all hurt pretty good. My legs swelled. my shoulders and neck from holding my head still. They had removed the head rests so you can feel the full effect of the G's. on my last two sessions would allow the Hones device support my head. I was tired and very hot.

According to the crew chief they have 4 cars each with various seat settings. he told me he was not positive he could fit me in the car. But the 4 car was his biggest car, meaning the distance the seat sat from the steering wheel. I climbed in just fine with one exception the roll bar that sits right at the top of the door. My head hit it and I was just barely able to squeeze in. My knees where pretty close and I had to prove that I could turn the steering wheel without hindrance. In one of the first email I was giving it stated that the tallest you could be is 6 foot 7 inches, I am 6 foot 6 and 1/2 inches. But I made it and getting out was easier. I wont be forgetting the experience, I would love to drive somewhere around 6000 RPM's. But I am not sure how I would handle it at 59 years old. I was sore for about two days the worst was in my legs. Funny thing is I am wearing the number 78 hat Martin Truex Jr. and the race that night came down to the 4 car and Martin. Martin won.

Too bad they didn't still use those roof hatches like the older generation cars. You could have just hopped in through the top.

Funny cars have roof flaps not stock cars. But what a idea but then again how many adrenaline junkies are 7 foot tall. :lol

_AH_DarkWolf

Yeah they have roof flaps but at one time they added roof escape hatches back when the window openings were kinda small. You don't remember that? I guess it was like the early 2000s.

I am not sure what you found but the roof flaps NASCAR uses aren't for escape they are designed to keep the car grounded when turned backwards. Dont know what pics you have but I would have to see a race with those flaps, BTW they open the wrong direction any air get under them bye bye flaps. Maybe you need to watch this short video. https://www.nbcsports.com/video/inside-nascar-roof-flaps-play-critical-role

_AH_DarkWolf

Yes, the little roof flaps keep the card on the ground, this is different from that.

That picture shows Michael Waltrip after he won, I think it was the fall 2003 race at Talladega. The windows were kinda small in the old cars and there was some concern about a driver's ability to get out if the car was stopped against a wall on the driver's side. So it became optional for teams to add that roof escape hatch. A couple years later when they came out with the first new gen cars, part of the redesign included a higher roof and larger windows which negated the need for the roof hatch.

When Waltrip won that Talladega race they were a new thing so he celebrated by popping out of the hatch.

Maybe you weren't into NASCAR back then.
